ACHS Cheerleaders Visit Wolfson's Childrens Hospital

National School Spirit Day - Sept 9, 2011

National School Spirit Day began in 2009 to celebrate leadership among cheerleaders and dancers! It was formed through the company Varsity Brands to help shine a spotlight on the character that being on a cheerleading or dance team builds through service to your community. The Atlantic Coast High School Cheerleaders participated in this year’s event by committing to do at least 4 hours of community service during the week leading up to September 9th .  They chose Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital as their project and decided to hold a school wide drive to collect stuffed animals and children’s books to donate to the hospital.  They collected all week and each afternoon sorted through the donations to separate the stuffed animals from the books.  On Friday, Sept. 9th, five of the cheerleaders along with their coaches, Cindy Keane and Whitney Kemp, went to the hospital after school and visited with the children who were in the hospital for various reasons, but mostly those who were there for chemo treatments or dialysis.  The children were each given a stuffed animal that they picked out and the books were given to the Child Life Center to use in their waiting areas and play rooms.

Stingray Booster Help

Hi Everyone!

We are about to start the first freshmen through senior year! This really is fun to be a part of this one time event in the history of our school.

Hope your summer didn't seem as short as ours. The reality is that class orientations start next Monday, 8/8/2011.

We are going to need some help attending the Booster Welcome Table. We will be "telling our story" ( last year's great beginning and how we assist our student athletes) and increasing our membership.  If you can help with any of the following times, please let me know:

   Monday                  Senior Orientation                   9:00 a.m.  and  1:00 p.m.

   Tuesday                Junior Orientation                     8:00 a.m.  and   12:30 p.m.

   Wednesday          Sophmore Orientation             8:00 a.m.  and   12:30 p.m.

   Thursday              Freshman Orientation               8:00 a.m.  and 12:30 p.m.

The greatest need for assistance is both sessions Wednesday.

Thanks in advance!

Duval County Schools To Cut Multiple Sports

We are saddened by the recent news that Duval County Schools will be cutting multiple sports programs this coming year in an attempt to help balance the upcoming budget. According to, County Athletic Director Jon Fox was forced into recommending cutting cross country, golf, tennis, wrestling, lacrosse and slow-pitch softball. The school board is faced with 90.1 million dollars to cut to balance the budget. It's been reported that the cuts in the sports programs mentioned will save between $445,298  and  $734,598 of this 90.1 million dollar deficit. Are you confused yet? What I'm getting from this is after cutting the sports mentioned,  the School Board STILL needs to cut another almost 90 million to balance out. Unfortunately, our kids are now suffering (and will most likely be suffering more) for what appears to be a political "battle royale" between the current administration and the current board.

Voice your opinions on these proposals (or make your own) in our Stingray Talk section at

A New Year Message From AD Blount

Happy New Year!  2010 was the start of something great, and I expect 2011 to bring even more opportunity and excitement for Atlantic Coast.

We are right in the midst of the winter sports season, with our basketball, soccer, girls weightlifting, and wrestling teams gearing up for Gateway Conference and state series district tournaments. Check the weekly athletic calendars for information about tournament game dates and times.

The mid-point of the academic year is also just around the corner. The first academic semester will end on January 19th.
Two notes about student eligibility:
1) Students must have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average to continue or begin participation on any Atlantic Coast athletic team.
2) Any student who plans to try-out for a team, but did not start at Atlantic Coast on the first day of school, back in August, must check with the Athletic Department to determine eligibility status.

Speaking of try-outs, the first practice dates for spring sports (baseball, lacrosse, fast-pitch softball, tennis, and track and field) will be held in January (see list below). The first practice date for flag football is February 21st. Check the Atlantic Coast website and for more scheduling information about voluntary conditioning workouts and try-outs.

Team Try-outs:
January 10th: Softball 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm 1/10 and 1/11.
January 10th: Lacrosse
January 17th: Baseball, Tennis
January 24th: Track and Field
Feburary 21st: Flag Football

Let's finish strong and continue to build on the great foundation we have established!

Coach Blount, A.D.
